Celebrando la diferencia de las cooperativas de crédito

As a not-for-profit financial institution, Centra works a little differently than your traditional big bank. Sure, we both offer similar products and services, but the similarities end once you look at how credit unions are structured. When you bank with Centra, or at another credit union, our profits go back to our Membership in the form of lower fees, better rates, and at Centra, cash rewards! Credit unions, like Centra, also look to their local communities when it comes to giving back, whether through acts of service or monetary support. That’s the credit union difference.

Our commitment goes beyond financial services! At Centra, our mission and vision are rooted in the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People.” It’s not just a phrase. It’s what drives our vision of creating value for the Communities we serve. We’re not just about offering lower fees and better rates. We’re about actively engaging with and supporting our Communities.

We believe in rolling up our sleeves and getting involved to make a positive impact. Centra and the Centra Foundation donate hundreds of thousands of dollars every year to support local organizations. But that’s just one way we give back. We’re also deeply committed to volunteer efforts and other forms of community support.

The credit union philosophy also extends to our efforts for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that all Members, Team Members, and Communities feel a sense of belonging. No matter who you are, there’s a place for you at Centra.

Here are some of the ways Centra works to give back to our Members, Team Members, and Communities we serve:

  • Holiday Giving Program. Each holiday season, the Centra Foundation collects monetary donations with the generosity of Centra Members, Team Members, and the local community to help provide gifts for children in need during the holiday season.
  • Team Member Nominated Donations. Centra Team Members nominate non-profit organizations each year to receive grants from the Centra Foundation, helping them continue their missions.
  • Loretta M. Burd Scholarship Program. The Centra Foundation awards $2,500 scholarships to high school seniors and adults seeking to further their education.
  • United Way Workplace Campaign. Our annual United Way Workplace Campaign raises money for local United Way agencies. In 2023, we raised $104,000 to support these local non-profits!
  • Teaming Up with Teachers. Teachers in our communities provide important quality education for our youth. In the past, the Centra Foundation awarded four teachers throughout the Communities Centra serves with $500 gift cards. In 2024, we switched things up and awarded eight teachers with a $250 shopping spree from their Amazon wish list!
  • Onward with Centra Credit Union. Onward is Centra’s mission-driven line of business, focused on financial inclusion by reaching out to underbanked or unbanked individuals, those who’ve never had the opportunity to work with a traditional banking system. The work of Onward differentiates Centra from other financial institutions by providing banking with a cause.

Ways you can support your community

The impact is even greater when our Members and Communities come together to make a difference. Supporting your community doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and it’s not just about donating money. Here are some ways you can give back:

  • Volunteer. There are endless opportunities to volunteer in your community, whether at homeless shelters, food banks, or animal shelters. Your time can make a real difference.
  • Donate. Don’t just think cash. Donate items you no longer need! From shoes to kitchenware, your donations can help local non-profits provide to those in need.
  • Join a mentorship program. Mentoring younger individuals in your community can have a lasting impact. Investing in their future is a powerful way to give back!
  • Shop local. Support local businesses to keep money in your community and strengthen the local economy.
  • Support clean-up efforts. Organizing or participating in clean-up efforts can beautify your community and inspire others to take pride in their surroundings.
  • Tutor. If you’re passionate about education, offering free tutoring services to struggling students can change lives.
  • Spread the word. You can help non-profit organizations in your community by amplifying their voices! Share their posts on social media or just tell your friends about their efforts.

As an organization rooted in giving back to our Communities, we encourage everyone to get involved in theirs! Even the smallest acts can make a big difference. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply supporting local businesses, your efforts matter. Together, we can make a real difference and build thriving communities. That’s what “People Helping People” is all about!
